Dr. Cora B. Marrett is the Deputy Director of the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Virginia. Confirmed as Deputy Director in May 2011, Dr. Marrett began her career with the NSF in 1992 as the first Assistant Director for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences directorate.
Prior to her appointment, Dr. Marrett was the Assistant Director for Education and Human Resources for the NSF. As the Assistant Director, she headed the NSF’s mission “to achieve excellence in U.S. science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education at all levels.”
While working at the NSF as Assistant Director for Social Behavioral and Economic Sciences, Dr. Marrett was the University of Wisconsin System’s Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs from 2001 to 2007.
She received her B.A. in Sociology from Virginia Union University, M.A. in Sociology and doctorate in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Marett also holds an honorary doctorate from Wake Forest University. In May 2011, she was awarded an honorary degree as a distinguished alumna from Virginia Union University.
