Women Who Bring Equality in Sight- Dr. Helene Gayle

Helene GayleDr. Helene Gayle is the president and CEO of CARE USA, an international humanitarian organization which focuses on improving international health care.

After joining CARE USA in 2006, Dr. Gayle created three programs as a part of its “Pathway to Empowerment.” These are “Mothers Matter,” focusing on improving access to safe pregnancy and delivery services for women in Asia, Africa, and Latin American by 2015, “Power Within” focusing on empowering girls to access education and gain leadership by 2015, and “Access Africa” focusing on ensuring that 30 million people in 39 countries have access to basic financial services by the next decade.

Prior to joining CARE USA, Dr. Gayle spent 20 years with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the Director of the CDC’s National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention. During that time she was also named the senior advisor for HIV/AIDS at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation directing programs on HIV/AIDS and other health issues.

Dr. Gayle serves on several boards including the Rockefeller Foundation, Harvard Business School Social Enterprise Initiative and Colgate-Palmolive Company. She is also currently a member of the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships and the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Affairs Policy Board.

She received her undergraduate degree at Barnard College of Columbia University, M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, and M.P.H. from Johns Hopkins University.

Vision 2020 recognizes Dr. Gayle for representing its National Goal of women in executive leadership positions.
