Presenting Sponsor of Vision 2020, The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company, recently conducted a survey of working mothers that found women log more hours cooking and cleaning at home than men, but they undervalue their contributions in dollar terms.
The survey went on to note that both women and men estimated their work around the house to be valued at about $25,000, but women spent more time than men each week on a variety of chores. Penn Mutual estimates women’s dollar contribution to be closer to $34,000 and slightly over $19,000 for men.
On top of their duties at home, women are also often bringing home about half of the household income, according to an article posted on Reuters website. “About 70 percent [of women] say they would prefer an assistant at home over one at the office,” the article noted.
Family-friendly workplace policies may help women in splitting their time between work and home. Want to know what your estimated financial worth is? Visit Penn Mutual’s calculator: http://www.worthforwomen.com/worth/pages/worth/index.html
