Nathan’s Adds Women’s Division to Hot-Dog Eating Contest

Equality can take on many forms, including eating contests. Nathan’s Hot Dogs, which hosts a hot-dog eating contest on the Fourth of July is adding a women’s division to the contest this year.

President of Major League Eating Richard Shea told The New York Post, “Serena Williams didn’t have to beat Roger Federer to win the Wimbledon title, and we don’t think Sonya Thomas [the top-ranked woman eater] should have to beat Joey Chestnut.”

Thomas has been nicknamed “The Black Widow” for all the men she has beat out in competitive eating contest in the past. Juliet Lee was the only other woman to make the finals in Nathan’s Fourth of July contest in 2010.

Is adding a women’s division a good idea? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
